June 11. Mr. Peng Keyu (4th left), Ambassador, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in New York, accepted the check of $250,000.00 from Committee Chair Mr. Louis Yip.

Ambassador Peng highly praised Rhode Island Chinese community and public for our extraordinary efforts in raising so much fund for earthquake relief. He expresed that the Chinese government is imposing strict regulations on the allocation of relief funds so tthat all the money can be used properly.

Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Adviser of the China Earthquake Relief Committee of Rhode Island and Dr. Yan Ma, Vice Chair of the China Earthquake Relief Committee of Rhode Island carried their commitment, efforts, and spirit with them to the program of the Enhancing Multiculturalism: Chinese Cultural Immersion for Global Leaders and Partners in Higher Education, Hangzhou, China, May 25-28, 2008.
The URI delegation members of Vice Provost Lynn Pasquerella, Dr. Harold Bibb, Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Director of the Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies, Mr. Melvin Wade, Director of the URI Multicultural Center, and Dr. Yan Ma Professor and Director of the Confucius Institute at URI organized, donated, and worked with conference participants from Ireland, Australia, Netherlands, and US to raise funds in China to help the earthquake victims. The $1150 raised funds were sent to the China Red Cross on Hangzhou. The local newspaper in China reported our fund raising event. We are a group from Rhode Island, USA. President Robert Carothers immediately joined us for the fund raising.
